Flower Profile - Peony

Oh my goodness, it’s peony season. You have probably seen them in gardens, home magazines, flower shops, your friend’s homes…it’s peony time. Because peonies are only available for a short time, we all go a little peony crazy. We cannot get enough of these lush, fragrant summer blossoms. They are a foolproof flower, you don’t have to be a skilled designer to make them look wonderful in a vase or centerpiece. Giving them as a cut flower bouquet will put the biggest smile on anyone’s face. This week we are passionate about peonies!

[Name of flower] Peony

 

[Family] Paeoniaceae

 

[Origin of flower] Asia, Southern Europe, Western North America

 

[Common uses] As a cut flower or flowering outdoor plant.

 

[Colors and Varieties Available] White, deep red, yellow and all different shades of pink.

 

[Fun Fact] People always ask us the same question about these pretty flowers, how to get rid of the ants. If you are cutting peonies from your garden they will almost always have a few little ants on them. Simply submerge the flower in water. If you are buying them from us, we promise…no ants!

 

[When to send] Peonies are available in the summer for a short period of time. We are already receiving peonies at both stores!

 

[At Westmount Florist…] Peonies are by far one of our favourite flowers. There is something so beautiful about all peonies in a vase, accented with filler and some seasonal greens. They aren’t the longest lasting flower, but they make such a statement during their short life span.
