Flower Profile - The Sunflower

Author : Lauren

When summer ends and fall begins the staff at Westmount Florist look forward to a certain flower, the sunflower! They are so versatile and look awesome in almost any autumn inspired bouquet or arrangement. This week, we are sweet on sunflowers!

[Name of flower] Sunflower

[Latin name] Helianthus annuus

[Origin of flower] Native to the Americas and then brought to Europe during the 16th centuary.

[Common uses] Most commonly found as a cut flower, or as an outdoor garden plant. Sunflower seeds and sunflower oil are often used in cooking all over the world.

[Colors and Varieties Available] Although there are over 35 different varieties of sunflowers, the colors usually remain the same. Different shades of yellows, oranges, browns and sometimes reds.

[Fun Fact] A common misconception about sunflowers is that their blossoms follow the sun. When in fact, mature sunflowers most commonly face east at all times and do not move. Only young sunflower buds and leaves engage in Heliotropism or “head turning”…but once they mature, the movements stop.

[When to send] They are at their peak in the late summer and early fall.

[At Westmount Florist…] We love sunflowers and use them as much as we possibly can when they are around. Sunflowers instantly cheer up any bouquet and add a touch of fall to every arrangement.
