Why Do Roses Wilt? - Part 2

Author : Christine and Lauren

This blog is an informative blast from the past, we posted our “why do roses wilt” blog a few months ago. Valentines Day is next week, so we thought why not give you as many tips as possible to keep your roses looking fresh for days!

Why do roses wilt? There is only one answer; the head of the rose isn’t getting water. The reasoning behind this varies, and that is where we begin!

Preparing roses properly is a crucial step that contributes to the longevity of the rose.  The buckets must be bacteria free, which means a good washing with special solution, hot water and lots of scrubbing.  Lukewarm water and a floral preservative are put in the bucket.  We strip some of the green leaves at the base of the stem so that none will go below the water level. The thorns are removed and once this is finished the roses are given a cut and immediately placed in the bucket.

You’re still probably wondering why the rose is wilting…

Some sort of blockage has occurred. Too many thorns were removed and air or dirt has been logged into the stem, blocking the water from taking it’s natural course to the head. This is why is it crucial that you fill you vase up to the lowest level where the foliage begins. In other words, if you have too much stem not in water, air or dirt can get in and create a blockage.

Another reason is the rose was not re-cut when it was taken home so the bottom has sealed up like a scab. Unless you re-cut it, it will never be able to draw up the water to the head.

Remember to always re-cut your stem and happy Valentines day from everyone at Westmount Florist!
