Flower Profile - The Peony

One of the most requested flowers for Montreal flower delivery is the peony. Peonies are widely popular and are loved for their magnificent fragrance, large blooms and the variety of colors they grow in. Their large ruffled blooms are perfect for bouquets, table arrangements and floral crowns. Peonies are sought after by brides-to -be as they make the perfect addition to wedding bouquets and centerpieces. Bonus: They are also supposed to bring good fortune!

The peony is a flowering plant native to Asia, Europe and Western North America (No doubt you have seen them growing locally here in Montreal too!), cultivated for its showy flowers. Herbaceous peonies bloom throughout late spring and early summer. The American peony society recognizes six flower forms of peonies; Single, Japanese, Anemone, Bomb, Single Double, and Double. Peonies are grown in every color except for blue.

History of the Peony

The word Peony originates from the Greek work Paeon. In Greek mythology Paeon was the physician to the gods. Paeon angered his teacher Asclepius, (the Greek god of medicine and healing) after he extracted a milky liquid from the peony, curing Pluto. Asclepius threatened to kill Paeon, but Zeus saved Paeon by turning him into a Peony. Dont mess with the greek gods! They love turning people in flowers!
